AETHERION

A shared world. An endless ascent.

The world of Aetherion

At the center of the world stands a Tower of a hundred floors that no one has ever seen end. Three hundred years ago it closed on the night of the Great Rupture. Now it has started to open again, and it takes many people to climb it.

The Tower

A hundred floors, and each one is a world

The Tower under a starry sky, its floors marked by lines of blue light.

The Tower was here before any people of Aetherion. From the outside it is a mountain of pale stone that disappears into the clouds. Inside, each floor is far larger than the Tower looks: it has its own sky, rivers, forests, ruins and creatures found nowhere else.

The floors are linked by stairways closed by seals. No seal opens to the strength of a single person. Ever since the first expeditions, people have known that the Tower was made to be climbed by many, together.

The Aether

The energy that gives life to magic

A knight in ether armor next to a burst of blue light in three frames.

The Aether flows beneath the land and rises through the Tower. Before the Rupture, a blue light came down from the top and kept the land fertile. People called that light the Descent.

Those who study magic learn to borrow a little of the Aether around them and give it back when the spell ends. Blue Aether is calm and obeys. Golden Aether, which appeared after the Rupture, changes everything it touches: plants, animals, stone and anyone who gets too close.

The Great Rupture

The night the sky tore open in gold

The Tower under a cracked sky, with golden light pouring through the rifts.

312 years ago, the kingdom of Aetherion ruled the first floor and sent expeditions ever higher. In a single night, which common folk call the Breaking, the blue light went out, the sky tore open in gold and every floor above the first one closed. The king and his court were up there and never came back.

The official chronicle says the Rupture was an attack from the Depths and that the king died defending the Tower. The elders of the Veiled tell a different story, and not everyone in Elyndor believes the chronicle.

Elyndor and the Awakened

The city on the first floor

Top-down test map of a village with houses, a stone square, paths, trees and a river.

Elyndor Citadel lies inside the Tower, in the valley of the first floor, the only one that survived the Rupture. For three centuries it was a refuge inside a closed Tower.

Three years ago, a night of tremors opened the stairway to the second floor. Since then, anyone who receives the Bond at the Temple of Awakening and dies inside the Tower comes back to life at the temple hours later. The Citadel Council called on everyone willing to climb. No one is chosen: anyone willing can receive the Bond, and thousands already have.

The factions

Three seats on the Council, three ideas about the Tower

  • Order of the Vigil

Heir to the old stairway guard. It protects Elyndor, watches the passages and organizes expeditions to the open floors.

  • Circle of the Aether

Scholars and mages. They teach magic, tend to those touched by golden Aether and try to understand the Awakening.

  • League of Reclaimers

Miners, scavengers and merchants. They buy what adventurers bring back, sell maps and keep the routes open.

Inside and outside the Tower

The places that already have a name

Elyndor Citadel

Floor 1. The city, the Temple of Awakening and the fields that feed everyone.

Whispering Grove

Floor 3, still sealed. They say the trees repeat the voices of those who died there.

Ashen Peaks

Outside the Tower, to the west. Mountains of the mining clans, where the Aether turns to crystal.

The Depths

Beneath the Tower. Tunnels the Aether flows through, which no one has fully mapped.
